The third feature film directed by Daisaku Kimura, the legend of Japanese cinema who not only has won the best cinematographer award in Japan Academy Film Prize for five times in the past, has also received the best director award as well with “THE SUMMIT: A CHRONICLE OF STONES” in 2009. All scenes are shot on locations, all shot in beautiful cinematography, and through Kimura’s direction and casts’ acting, we can directly feel the beautiful way of samurai’s life. This “beautiful historical drama” will surely leave a mark on the history of Japanese cinema.
The script is written by Takashi Koizumi, who worked as an assistant director to Akira Kurosawa in “Kagemusha”, ”Ran”, “Madadayo”, etc.. His directorial debut “After the Rain (2000)” (screenplay by Akira Kurosawa) has won the best picture prize of the 42nd Japan Academy Film Prize, which is followed by well-made cinemas including “Letter from the Mountain” and “Samurai Chronicle”, all reminiscent of Kurosawa films.
The original work is by Rin Hamuro, who won the Naoki Prize with “Samurai Chronicle”. From his masterpiece “Samurai’s Promise” (KADOKAWA bunko), comes a screenplay that depicts samurai’s dignified way of living, their will of risking their lives to save their loved ones, and the painful but beautiful story of love.
The main roles are Junichi Okada, a nation-wide popular actor, and Hidetoshi Nishijima who appears in many popular TV drama/ film including “MOZU” and “Creepy”. Other casts are Hana Kuroki, Sosuke Ikematsu, Naoto Ogata, Hirofumi Arai, Yuya Yagira, Kumiko Aso, Renji Ishibashi, Junko Tomiyama, and Eiji Okuda.
Shinbei Uryu (Junichi Okada), a man exiled from his clan after closing in on its suspicious activities. After leaving the clan, his wife Shino (Kumiko Aso), who stood by his side, falls ill, and makes one final wish. “Please help Uneme Sakakibara…” For Shinbei, Umeme (Hidetoshi Nishijima) was a good friend and a rival, even a romantic one in which they once fought over Shino. Moreover, Umeme was related to the reason for Shinbei’s exile. To fulfill his wife’s wish, Shinbei scrambles to reveal the darkness within the clan as well as the true feeling that Shino had. Shino’s younger sister (Haru Kuroki) and younger brother (Sosuke Ikematsu) were bewildered to see the returned brother-in-law, but they both soon get drawn to his honest feelings for Shino and his dignified way of samurai to correct the wrong. When Shinbei draws closer to the truth behind a series of incidents that involved his wife and best friends. There, he finally realizes the truth of the incident and the painful yet heartwarming truth behind his wife’s dying wish. But behind the truth lies an even bigger power that was about to attack Shinbei….
